Edinburgh, with its rich history and vibrant culture, is an ideal destination for digital nomads seeking a blend of work and leisure.  Whether you’re looking for a quick midday refresh or a scenic stroll, the city offers numerous options to explore during your lunch break.  Using the SWURF app, you can discover laptop-friendly venues to work in and receive discounts on food and drink—all for free.  Here are three captivating walks that will let you soak in the essence of Edinburgh, all starting from convenient SWURF venues.

   1. Princes Street Gardens Walk

  • Starting Point: Kimpton Charlotte Square
  • Ending Point: Mount Royal Princes Street

Begin your walk at the elegant Kimpton Charlotte Square Hotel and head towards the west end of Princes Street Gardens.  This lush urban park offers a tranquil escape right in the heart of the city.  As you walk through the gardens, enjoy the seasonal floral displays and take in the stunning views of Edinburgh Castle perched high on its rock.

Stroll past the iconic Ross Fountain and continue towards the east end of the gardens.  You’ll encounter the impressive Scott Monument; a tribute to the famous Scottish author Sir Walter Scott.  The walk concludes at the historic Mount Royal Princes Hotel (now the Mercure Edinburgh City Princes Street), where you can take a moment to appreciate the bustling atmosphere of Princes Street.

Highlights:

  • Princes Street Gardens: A serene green space with beautiful floral displays.
  • Edinburgh Castle: Majestic views of the historic fortress.
  • Scott Monument: A towering Gothic structure dedicated to Sir Walter Scott.

Duration: Approximately 30 minutes

2. Calton Hill Loop

  • Starting Point: The Glasshouse Hotel
  • Ending Point: Joseph Pearce

Starting from the back of The Glasshouse Hotel, embark on a short but invigorating loop around Calton Hill. This walk begins with a climb up the steps accessed via Greenside to the hill’s summit, rewarding you with panoramic views of the city.  Calton Hill is home to several notable monuments, including the National Monument, the Nelson Monument, and the Dugald Stewart Monument.

Circle around the summit, taking in the sweeping vistas of Edinburgh’s skyline, the Firth of Forth, and the surrounding countryside.

Return to Greenside, slip past the The Glasshouse via Upper Greenside Lane, take a right onto Leith Walk, walk over the junction of London Road and then swing right onto Elm Row and onto Joseph Pearce, where you will be rewarded with a discounted ‘Fika’ deal (a coffee and a sweat treat) when you remember to check in on the SWURF app.

This loop is perfect for those looking to clear their minds and enjoy a bit of exercise without straying too far from the city centre.

Highlights:

  • Panoramic Views: Stunning cityscape views from the top of Calton Hill.
  • Historic Monuments: Explore the National Monument, Nelson Monument, and Dugald Stewart Monument.

Duration: Approximately 35 minutes

3. Edinburgh Old Town Walk

  • Starting Point: Eve at the Virgin Hotel
  • Ending Point: Scotsman Hotel

This walk offers a delightful blend of Edinburgh’s historic charm and modern vibrancy.  Start at Eve at the Virgin Hotel, located on Victoria Street, one of Edinburgh’s most picturesque streets (there’s a 99.99% chance you’ll have seen this street on an Instagram post).  Descend the colourful, shop-lined street to the bustling Grassmarket, a historic marketplace now teeming with lively pubs and cafes.

From the Grassmarket, follow the curve left onto West Bow, then turn right onto Candlemaker Row.  Here, you’ll find the entrance to Greyfriars Kirkyard, a historic and atmospheric graveyard famous for the loyal dog, Greyfriars Bobby.  Walk through the Kirkyard and exit onto George IV Bridge.

Turn left and walk past the National Library of Scotland, then right onto the Royal Mile.  Continue past St Giles’ Cathedral and various historic sites until you reach North Bridge.  Turn left onto North Bridge and find the Scotsman Hotel on your left, completing your scenic journey through Edinburgh’s historic heart.
